APJ Virtual Meetup Recap
On June 16th, 2021, Salt Community Manager Janae Andrus and Salt creator Tom Hatch hosted the first-ever APJ virtual meetup event! The event, hopefully the first of many, was attended by members of the Salt community from Australia, Singapore, India, Taipei and Korea, just to name a few.
The meetup was a wonderful introduction to Salt. It included some background on the platform itself and key players, including creator Tom Hatch. Janae kicked everything off by providing an introduction to Tom, who has managed, consulted, and helped build some of the largest infrastructures in the world, from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands. Fun fact, Tom even used to work with the US intelligence community! Although he says that feels like ages ago (we feel you, Tom!)
Then we got to the exciting stuff – learning about Salt! Tom dug into the technical details, but let’s look at the main topics of discussion:
- What exactly is Salt? This software is Tom’s brain child from 20 years back! Janae said it best when she described it as “an automation software that just makes everything easier.” Simple, but beautiful.
- Why do so many people love Salt today? Since its creation, Salt has evolved into one of the largest and friendliest open-source communities in the world. Tom points out one of the biggest benefits, in that, “Salt in itself is an extremely robust general-purpose platform.” He also notes that Salt’s complete management view is one of its strongest differentiators from other automation software.
- Okay, so Salt is great, but how do I configure it for myself? Lucky for you, Tom went step-by-step through Config 101 on this meet-up! From the Salt unified management model to Salt States, detailing the layers of Salt (including SLS files) and explaining how Salt provides the user with an imperative and declarative system. He even explains the commands and demonstrates how they help with every aspect of managing a system.
- What else do I need to know to get started? Honestly, getting started is key! Tom encouraged everyone to download Salt and walk through the software alongside him on the meetup. This is a unique hands-on experience for anyone looking to begin their Salt journey.
At the end of the presentation, the floor opened for questions, and we even had a viewer recommend a new feature for Salt! Wish you could’ve hopped in on the conversation? Don’t worry! There will be more monthly virtual meetups coming up on different discussion topics. If you’re on the edge of your seat, waiting to jump into the conversation, submit a proposal to speak at SaltConf 2021 and possibly become a featured speaker to share your experience!
