SaltStack Delivers More Automation for Docker and LXC Application Containers

SaltStack 2014.7 release includes management of networked containers

Salt Lake City – Dec. 9, 2014 – SaltStack, the creators of software to automate cloud infrastructure operations, today announced the new SaltStack 2014.7 release includes more automation for the latest versions of Docker and LXC application containers. The new SaltStack application container support now includes management of networked containers adding to existing SaltStack automation for heterogeneous container deployment and management at scale across any cloud or infrastructure.

The SaltStack 2014.7 release includes the following new support for application containers:

  • Salt Mine delivers a data store for application containers including network info and ports;
  • SaltStack can define and track CPU parameters for hosts running Docker containers;
  • New Salt execution modules and states to call Docker load and save and to install a Docker image from a tar file;
  • SaltStack Runner support to create an LXC cloud;
  • Salt Cloud bootstrap support for installing SaltStack on an LXC container;
  • Support for the latest Docker releases.

Nicole Thomas, SaltStack engineer, wrote a tutorial to explain how SaltStack can be used to manage Docker at scale on any infrastructure or cloud. The article provides a step-by-step guide to implementing a simple SaltStack and Docker environment used to run a PHP application with HAProxy and Apache. With this setup, information about each Docker container IP address and exposed port can be easily obtained and used for production-ready, real-world orchestration. A video demo, showing hundreds of containers under management, and the tutorial are both available from this blog post titled, “Using SaltStack in production to manage Docker application containers.”
