SaltStack Named Gartner “Cool Vendor” for DevOps
SaltStack provides system provisioning, infrastructure and configuration management, and cloud orchestration delivered at DevOps speed and scale
Salt Lake City – April 24, 2013 – SaltStack, the full systems and configuration management stack for any cloud, today announced it has been named by Gartner, Inc. as one of four “Cool Vendors in DevOps, 2013” in its just-released report.*
SaltStack is unique in providing enterprise software for remote system execution together with configuration management built specifically for modern data center infrastructures and any cloud environment. SaltStack takes a programmatic, common-sense approach to server infrastructure configuration and management, allowing IT organizations to quickly create system states and automation flows or to leverage existing content developed by the Salt community.
According to Gartner, “One specific focus of DevOps for some IT organizations is the shift toward configuration as code. In this context, DevOps borrows from the fact that as developers code applications with business logic, the infrastructure can be coded via configuration logic or directives.”
Marc Chenn, SaltStack CEO, said, “The DevOps industry moves fast, and the systems administrators and DevOps professionals who work in it need new tools built for speed and scale. Old software tools were built to address old infrastructure requirements and their relevance in the modern data center is rapidly diminishing. The Gartner ‘Cool Vendors in DevOps, 2013’ report provides a sneak peek into the IT operations management renaissance and the tools that support this new era of computing.”
Thomas Hatch, SaltStack founder and CTO, spent years building data centers and architecting cloud infrastructures. The tools at his disposal were never sufficient for the job at hand, so he created Salt.
Thomas said, “Today’s systems management software needs to be really fast, scalable by design, and infinitely flexible to meet the demands of DevOps pros. In addition, configuration management really shouldn’t be so tedious. SaltStack is doing its part to simplify the job.
“The SaltStack vision provides the most efficient state management combined with the fastest, most-scalable flow automation. State and flow are better together when provided from a single platform and the DevOps toolchain is incomplete without both.”
SaltStack is utilized by enterprise application support teams, system administrators and DevOps staff who require fast and scalable process automation. SaltStack also provides dynamic and flexible parallel provisioning for physical environments and orchestration for cloud and virtual environments. SaltStack works in a push or pull model with intelligent masters and minions for flexible and dynamic automation.
The Salt open source project currently has more than 400 unique contributors, notably larger and more active than any other systems or configuration management community. In 2012 SaltStack was named by GitHub as one of its top-ten largest development projects. SaltStack is a long-term supported branch of Salt and, by design, SaltStack code is 100% open, not open core.
